According to a recent survey (June 2024) the UK has seen a 4.4% drop in the number of books being read by children with “secondary school pupils reading at the same level as primary pupils”. This is the first decline since research began 16 years ago. Whilst it can feel impossible to compete with screens and digital distractions, reading is an irreplaceable skill that must be encouraged.
